Most of the site would be surrounded by a vegetative buffer. Another 180 stalls would line the street. Toward Hamline Avenue, south of the pickleball fields, the second phase would add picnic area, two sepak takraw courts and two multi-use athletic fields.Īs for parking, 528 parking stalls would fill two parking lots off Montreal Avenue, one just west of the track facilities and the other at Montreal and Hamline. An as-yet-to-be determined future use would replace golf entirely in a second phase of park development, but preserve the ski area. In the center of the future park area, a reconfigured 9-hole, Par 3 golf course would double as a 2.5-kilometer cross-country ski area in the winter. Parks and Rec would install a picnic and fitness area, a skate park, futsal and pickleball courts closer to Montreal and Hamline avenues. The plan has no direct impact on the nearby 18-hole Highland National Golf Course, which reopened in 2005 after two years of construction. Officials have made clear there’s no funding budgeted for the $18 million to $22 million concept plan, which might well be a decade or more away from realization. Paul Parks Commission voted in early January to approve a combined vision that incorporates elements from all four concepts, with a variety of public uses gradually replacing golf in two phases. Paul Parks and Recreation officials have held public outreach meetings and considered four concept plans that re-think uses for the acreage between Snelling and Hamline avenues and Montreal Avenue and Edgcumbe Road. With the city population growing and becoming more diverse, and interest in golf waning, city officials have officially decided there’s no need to maintain two public golf courses in Highland Park.įor months, St. Paul’s Highland 9 golf course could someday be replaced with lacrosse, football, baseball, soccer, sepak takraw, a skate park, picnic areas, cross-country skiing and pickleball. It’s an unfunded vision that may be a decade away from reality.
